I joined a science cafe, RiCafe, at a cafe, Cafe FLEUR, near Shinsaibashi station, Osaka City. The speaker was Mr. Michinari Yamamoto of Ayabe Astronomical Observatory, Ayabe city, Kyoto Prefecture, and theme was `Hearing meteors -- method to observe meteors through radio.'

Again this evening, the researchers of CLIP, IfES, visited the observatory. Three of my students, Miyazaki-san, Ota-kun, and Tsujioka-kun showed them the dome. The weather was clear, so the researchers could enjoy the Moon and stars through the telescope.

About ten researchers from abroad staying at Wakayama University who are now engaged in Can-Sat Leader Training Program (CLTP) of Institute for Education on Space[J] (IfES) visited the astronomical observatory of Faculty of Education, Wakayama University, atop the faculty building. Unfortunately, the weather was cloudy, we could only show the telescope and dome. Two of my students, Miyazaki-san and Tsujioka-kun helped me to show inside the dome.

The 12-m radio telescope held its ceremony of putting up the ridgepole. The telescope will be operated by Wakayama University, Institute for Education on Space (IfES), and it is in the university main campus.

I helped star story telling and watching party held at Kamagasaki, day laborer's residence in Osaka City, where various wintering events were held. The star party was planned by an NPO corporation Cocoroom[J] and Okyudo Masami-san of Faculty of Tourism, Wakayama University. First, we had a talk session at Furusato-no-ie (hometown's house); about the Milky Way by me, about the Sun by Yokoyama Masaki-san of IfES[J], Wakayama University, about the stars by Nogami Daisaku-san of Kwasan Observatory, Kyoto University, and about `Hayabusa', the sample-return asteroid mission, by Okyudo-san. Nogami Emi-san of Kobe University also join the session. After that, we moved to Sankaku-Koen (the triangle park), and spread telescopes that Okyudo-san brought. We enjoyed talking to many people in front of telescopes waiting for clearing up the sky, though, we had to end up the star watching party by the sudden snow.

I attended annual presentation of super science high school (SSH) students in Wakayama Prefecture, held at Wakayama Prefecture Cultural Hall. The presentation was followed by a talk by Dr. Toshihide Masukawa, a Nobel Prize winner in physics 2008.


I joined Wakayama University manager's training stay, held at Manpa, a hotel at Wakaura resort, Wakayama City.

After that, I visited Wakayama Branch Office of the University of Air to briefly discuss about next year's my class.

I was invited a monthly regular meeting of 'Lalala-no-kai', a music club organized by Oyabu Makiko-san, a pianist and composer. At first, I talked about the Moon and stars, and Oyabu-san played the electronic keybord. Then, participants, who were Lalala-no-kai's regular members, discussed about 'what is science?'. 'Does science tell truth?', 'Will science be affected by the public as music is?' and so on. I felt that science cafe progresses from an old type, one-way outreach and prepared by government or university, to a new type, both-way discussion and prepared by citizens.

I attended a science cafe, 'Hoshi to Kaze no Salon' (Stars and Winds Salon), Mitaka City, Tokyo. The topic was biodiversity and agriculture in Myanmar.

I visited Attached Junior High School, Faculty of Education, Wakayama University, 6th period, a science class about force, by a 3rd-grade university student, Shimizu Ryoma-kun. I also attended the conference to discuss the class.


I talked at a science cafe held at Everyon's School, Burakuri-cho, Wakayama City. I enjoyed talking about Milky Way and other topics with participants.

I visited Osaka Prefecture University and met staffs of Women Scientists Support Center, through the introduction of Dr. Yoshihiko Suzuki, a professor of Center for Joint Research and Development, Wakayama University. We discussed about how we should support women scientists.

I attended 15th APEC Women Leaders Network Meeting, held at Keio Plaza Hotel, Tokyo, with Wakayama University vice president and trustee Ms. Kumiko Obino, who is a member of the organizing committee. I met many people, espetially those from companies and from abroad, and discussed about importance of people's diversity and mutual trust. I tried to take pictures of the Milky Way using a digital camera, Canon S90, which Dr. Takeshi Inukai of University of Yamanashi Hopital recommended. At the shouthern tip of Wakayama Prefecture, Kushimoto, taken with manual mode, ISO 3200, F 2.0, exposure time of 15 sec, saved as 1600x1200-pixel jpegs, combined multiple frames using a PC software of Registax v5.1, enhanced using Microsoft Office Picture Manager with brightness of 0, contrast of 30, and tone of 20: Summer Triangle (13 frames combined) jpeg / Aquila and Scutum (9 frames combined) jpeg / Cassiopeia, Cepheus, Polaris, and M 31 (11 frames combined) jpeg

In the 31st National Childcare Assembly sponcered by All-Japan Prefectural and Municipal Workers Union held in Wakayama City, I was in charge of `Enjoy the Space Travel' whorkshop, held at Wakayama City Worker's General Center; this evening's night sky using the air-dome type planetarium NEX, a hand-made spectrograph using grating sheet, and story about Hayabusa using video taken by IfES, Institute for Education on Space, Wakayama University.


Wakayama Univeristy Open Campus was held. I showed about 30 people the astronomical observatory atop the building of Faculty of Education, Wakayama University.

Parents as well as children attended the festival held at the nursery. I presented a story about Hayabusa, a Japanese mission of sample return to an asteroid Itokawa. Graduate students of Furutani Meiko-san and Yamada Hiroaki-kun helped the festival.

IfES[J] broadcasted the re-entry of Hayabusa, a sample-return probe from an asteroid Itokawa, as streaks of light in the Australian night sky. I was not engaged in the broadcasting, though, my colleague did a wonderful job.

I helped star watching party held at Triangle Park, Kamagasaki, day laborer's residence in Osaka City. There held a May Day eve party at the park, and several tens of people enjoyed watching Venus the evening star, Saturn and Titan, and Arcturus by telescopes. The star watching party was planned by an NPO corporation Cocoroom and Okyudo Masami-san of Faculty of Tourism, Wakayama University. I showed using an 8-cm refractor. The sky was clear, and to be lucky for us, we saw the International Space Station passing over us with a bright streak of light. Everyone really enjoyed watching star through telescopes.
