授業の概要・ねらい
/Course Aims
This course offers an overview of the ideological and cultural background of Japan's modernization (Meiji period) and postwar "economic miracle" (1960s) from the perspectives of economic affluence and mental/environmental sustainability. Public and private interpretations of the meaning of affluence and poverty will be examined in detail with a special focus on national mega-events such as EXPO. The discourse of post-disaster recovery will be introduced as a mitigating area aiming at SDG global agenda.

/Course Objectives
Identify major themes in Japan's economic development from ideological, historical and cultural perspectives. Adopt a flexible  perspective to the complexity of economic development, and develop an appreciation of the variety of genres addressing the experience affluence and poverty.

/Grading Policies/Criteria
Media survey component 25%; personal history component (reflection on the infrastructures and economic background of one's engagement with the study of Japanese language and culture) 25%; Final research paper 50%

1 Lecture 1 Japan a modern nation/ the new national economy Here we discuss the framework of the modern state in its effort for recognition by the modern world order with special attention to labor-related class and gender tranformations.

3 Lecture 3 Patriotic sacrifices Here we will discuss the political economy of colonialism in understanding the Pacific war and post-war ideas surrounding economic development in Japan and its relation to Asia.

5 Lecture 5 Economic Superpower Here we will discuss the economic developments under the postwar "Peace" constitution with special attention to mega-events with global dissemination goals, such as the International Exposition of 1970.

9 Lecture 9 Japan's Involvement in the Developing World Here we will examine the economic legacy of the Japanese Empire in Asia and the Pacific in contrast to the post-war economic aid to the area and other parts of the developing world (Africa, Latin America).

11 Lecture 11 Cultural Diplomacy Here we will address Japan's transition to a "soft power" with focus on the culture and heritage industry, identifying core values and predicaments of hospitality.

13 Lecture 13 Decline, Aging, and "Future Society for Our Lives" Here we will observe the economic cycle of growth and decline through social phenomena reflecting the post-Bubble economic anxiety, which redefine gender, generation and class structures. Osaka Expo 2025's economic vision will be recast against the 1970's event as a way to highlight the current directions and ideals of the future Japan.
