授業の概要・ねらい ／Course Aims |
This course will familiarize students with the major works and authors of pre-modern (classical) Japanese prose. Primary readings will include works from the early mythologies, imperial chronicles and gazetteers to selections from monogatari, nikki, and travel literature of the classical to the early modern periods. |

到達目標 ／Course Objectives |
The lecture/discussion format is designed to enable students to make and express their own informed responses to these works in light of their cultural and historical background. While primarily focused upon prose, this course also aims at the introduction of traditional concepts that characterize Japanese aesthetics broadly. |

Grading will be based on participation in class discussions, weekly quizzes, and a final test. |
