24 (Friday) - 25 (Saturday) March 2017


We invited Dr. Pedro Russo of Leiden Observatory, the Netherlands, and had informal meetings and discussed with astronomy education and outreach. Dr. Pedro Russo served International Year of Astronomy 2009 Secretariat, and now is working on various international projects including project manager of Universe Awareness and member of editorial board of Communication of Astronomy with the Public Journal. On 24 March, we had an informal meeting at Osaka Science Museum, Osaka City, with local astronomy educators and amateur astronomers including school students, and Space Scoop Japanese translation volunteers. On 25 March, we observed the rocket launching project conducted by teams of secondary school students and university students, and discussed about the space education and space tourism education. We also visited Wakayama University and discussed about various topics on astronomy education.

We had a meeting for annual report of university-school collaboration, academic year 2016, coordinated by Faculty of Education, Wakayama University and Boards of Education of Wakayama Prefecture and other areas, held at Faculty of Education, Wakayama University.

I visited Tanagawa Elementary School, Misaki Town, Osaka Prefecture, where is a planetarium supported by school staff and local community. I and Okyudo-san enjoyed a wonderful projection for pupils. Ms. Miwa Shimasaka kindly introduced this school. I had interviews to Ms. Atsuko Takeuchi, the principal of the school, on 8 November 2016 and 16 January 2017 in advance.

The special class for Kainan Senior High School, Wakayama Prefecture, was held at Wakayama University. Students counted the numbers of stars with 1st to 6th magnitudes, trying to inspect whether the space is homogeneous, with the aid of university students.

I visited Yakushi-in, a Shingon-sect Buddhist temple, Kishiwada City, Osaka, as a guest of 'Astronomy at Temple,' talk and discussion with people at a temple about our view of universe and life, organized by an astonomer and a Buddhist priest. The chief priest of Mr. Goken Ono talked about his holding ceremonial service trip to the Pacific War battlefields. I gave a small talk about my experience of IAU NASE course held in Indonesia. Both of us talked about international relationship. After that, we discussed with about 15 people gathered at the temple.

I enjoyed an event of astronomy talk with several visually impaired children, their parents, teacher, and supporting staff of an NPO, books for weak eyesight children, held at a hall for childcare and youth, Suita City, Osaka Prefecture. I explained about season changing and global scale air and water circulation using a ball which represents the Earth. I also introduced the Voyager message and tried to convey children that we all are the humans on a planet Earth and there is a great diversity in our style of life around the world.

I gave a special lecture about astronomy to 32 senior high school students, in 1st and 2nd grades, as a preparation seminar for Kinokuni Science Olympiad, a science contest for high school students in Wakayama Prefecture.

Network for Astronomy School Education (NASE), a working group for in-service teacher's training for mainly seconday school teachers, which was establised in the discussion of International Year of Astronomy 2009, under the Commission C1 (Astronomy Education and Development), Division C (Education, Outreach, History and Heritage), International Astrnomical Union (IAU), held its 82th course at Ma Chung University, Malang, East Java, Indonesia. I served an instructor together with NASE chair Dr. Rosa M. Ros from Spain and NASE vice chair Dr. Beatriz García from Angentina. This course welcomed about 30 people in Indonesia, mainly secondary school teachers and local astronomy club members including Surabaya Astronomy Club. The course atendees were in two groups. In each group, instructors made a pair, NASE instrucor and local educators. The local educators will have their own NASE activity in the future. On 23, there held a university's 9th anniversary ceremony and we had a chance to attend the ceremony, talk with university's managers. The course itself was held from 25 to 28, from morning to evening. The rector of Ma Chung University is Dr. Chatief Kunjaya who was one of my alumni when we were graduate students at Department of Astronomy, Kyoto University, Japan. We, instructors and course atendees, had a great chance to discuss not only the astronomy education, but also relation between science and society, spirit of torerlance, multi-culture, and many other thing related to our life.

I visited Wakayama Shin-Ai Women's Senior High School, Wakayama City. Nine students tried to do astronomy image reduction with the processing software Makalii.

I visited Nozomi Nursery, Wakayama City (10:30-11:30). I present some videos of space rockets, and after that, I encouraged children to draw imaginary worlds that they wanted to visit or they could enjoy to visit.

I visited Yakushi-in, a Shingon-sect Buddhist temple, Kishiwada City, Osaka, as a guest of 'Astronomy at Temple,' talk and discussion with people at a temple about our view of universe and life, organized by an astonomer and a Buddhist priest. The chief priest of Mr. Goken Ono talked about his experience of a hard ascetic practice. Since the practice is related to Venus, solar and lunar eclipse, I gave a small talk about the mysteric motion of the planets. After that, we discussed about a long-time training to be any kind of profession.
