I attended Fall 2001 Annual Meeting of the Astronomical Society of Japan held at Mito.

25 (Monday) - 27 (Wednesday) March 2002


1st Astronomical Observation Class was held at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. Four students from Okayama University and four students from Hiroshima University attended the class. Together with other staff, I gave lectures for the class.

15 (Friday) - 22 (Friday) March 2002


I stayed at Kiso Observatory for the open use (dome of 105-cm Schmidt). Takeuchi-san (NAOJ/IoA), Wakayama University students (Kinoshita-kun, Minamoto-kun, Furukawa-kun, Nishibata-kun, Yamamot-san) helped observation. This time, we could make a remote operation of the telescope from the main building. Students have learned many things about observation; Takeuchi-san sometimes gave instructions (pic1, pic2, pic3, pic4, pic5, pic6). I drew a field of view of the 2K CCD camera on the finder display (like this).

8 March 2002 (Friday)


Kainan Senior High School 2nd-grade students visited our laboratory. I introduced astronomy seminar at Wakayama University, showed solar image at Univeristy astronomical observatory.

I visited Mitaka Campus of National Astronomical Observatory. I developed movie materials for astronomical education with Ishikawa-kun.

2 March 2002 (Saturday)


I attended Kinki regional meeting of Astronomical Educaion held at Osaka Kyoiku University Tennoji Campus.

26 (Tuesday) - 28 (Thursday) February 2002


I stayed at Nobeyama Radio Observatory for observations using 45-m single dish telescope. During the observations allocated in early February, we met a machine trouble. Then, we can have another one day for the observation. The weather condition was not good: fine -> cloudy -> foggy -> rainy -> snowing, but with data taken when it was fine and cloudy, we somehow detected some emissions.

18 February 2002 (Monday)


50th Wakaten Meeting was held at 7th Seminar Room of Faculty of Education, Wakayama University, from 16:20 to 17:40. Participants were Kamitamari (Kawabe Cosmic Park), Geshiro (Oishi Observatory), Ishikawa, Tomita (Faculty of Education).


Kamitamari-san reported about events held in mid February including relay of aurora image.


Next meeting will be held in April at 7th Seminar Room from 16:00.

3 (Sunday) - 12 (Tuesday) February 2002


I stayed at Nobeyama Radio Observatory for observations using 45-m single dish telescope. Our project was to detect CO emission in dwarf irregular galaxies, conducted by Dr. Deidre Hunter. T.T.Takeuchi-san joined our observations and discussion. Though they were weak, we somehow detected some emission lines. We had 15 to 16 straight hours observation lobor a day.

The focus moving system of the 60cm telescope of Wakayama University has repaired (Ishikawa-kun is checking).

We have the telescope dome repaired (pic1, pic2). Recently, the dome has a serious leak.

15 January 2002 (Monday)


49th Wakaten Meeting was held at 7th Seminar Room of Faculty of Education, Wakayama University, from 16:00 to 18:00. Participants were Yaji, Kamitamari, Furuya (Kawabe Cosmic Park), Toyomasu (Misato), Soga, Nishihama, Niinobe, Nakashita (Faculty of System-Engineering), Ishikawa, Mita, Tomita (Faculty of Education).


Yaji-san presented his tips on Grant-in-Aid. Toyomasu-san explained a big event held in Feb-March on internet. Kamitamari-san announced this year's meeting of public astronomical observatories.

I attended Symposium on Astronomy of Kyoto University, held at Department of Astronomy, Kyoto University.

I stayed at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory for spectroscopy of dwarf irregular galaxies.


Iwata-san of Kyoto University and seminar students of Wakayama University (Ishikawa-kun, Furukawa-kun, Ohta-kun, Okamoto-san, Nishibata-kun, Yamamoto-san) joined the observation (pic1; pic2; pic3).


The observatory put a pretty Christmas tree (pic).

10 December 2001 (Monday)


48th Wakaten Meeting was held at 7th Seminar Room of Faculty of Education, Wakayama University, from 15:00 to 16:20. Participants were Yaji, Kamitamari (Kawabe Cosmic Park), Soga (Faculty of System-Engineering), Ishikawa, Tomita (Faculty of Education).


Kamitamari-san and Yaji-san showed videos of Leonids.

A reporter of News Wakayama visited and gathered data about Students Independent Seminar. She interviewed Goto-san whom I supervised.

Leonids showd its maximum activity at late night. I took a movie by SONY Handycam DCR-TRV30 with the Super Night Shot 5 seconds from 25:53 JST (towards Leo; AVI movie; 18 MB).

My class, World of Universe, was open to the public as an open class for the Faculty Development of University.

12 November 2001 (Monday)


47th Wakaten Meeting was held at 7th Seminar Room of Faculty of Education, Wakayama University, from 16:20 to 18:20. Participants were Toyomasu (Misato Observatory), Yaji, Kamitamari (Kawabe Cosmic Park), Nishihama (Faculty of System-Engineering), Furukawa, Nishibata (Faculty of Education).


We discussed events on Leonids.

On the University festival day, our astronomy facility opened to the public.

I visited Kiso Observatory for open use observations. Takeuchi-san (NAOJ/IoA), Sato-san (Tokyo Univ), Iwata-san (Kyoto Univ), and Ishikawa-kun (Wakayama Univ) helped the observations (in the control room). In the control room, the WS ayame controls the data acquisition (pic). The WS kakehasi controls a new auto guiding system that is developed by Dr. Miyata of Kiso Observatory (pic). A PC monitors field of view (pic). The WS ontake controls the telescope (pic). On 11 November, ontake crashed seriously. We opened the main body of ontake to cool (pic). At night of 12 November, we had a clear sky. I took a movie by SONY Handycam DCR-TRV30 with the Super Night Shot mode (AVI movie; Orion; 18 MB).

I visited the IR simulator at Mitaka Campus of National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (pic1; pic2). The next day, I met Baba-san and Nakanishi-san (pic).

I attended the 40-year memorial ceremony of Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, held at Kurashiki, Okayama.

The Friendship class was held at Misato Town, Wakayama. Twenty-eight 5th or 6th grade students participated the class. They enjoyed various science experiments and star watching.

A software indicating the hour angle developed by Saika-san and Kubo-san, who were astronomy seminar students, will be included in the CD-ROM of "Hoshizora Nenkan 2002" by Astroarts.

46th Wakaten Meeting was held at 7th Seminar Room of Faculty of Education, Wakayama University, from 16:00 to 18:00. Participants were Toyomasu (Misato Observatory), Yaji, Kamitamari, Furuya (Kawabe Cosmic Park), Nishihama (Faculty of System-Engineering), Ishikawa, Mita (Faculty of Education).


Ishikawa reported Summer School 2001, Yaji reported the Meeting of the Astronomical Society of Japan, and Toyomasu reported the internet broadcasting from Misato Observatory.

Participants were Toyomasu, Yodomaru (Misato Observatory), Yaji, Kamitamari, Furuya (Kawabe Cosmic Park), Soga, Nishihama (Faculty of System-Engineering), Ishikawa, Tomita (Faculty of Education).


Yadomaru-san reported movie making with DVD writer for astronomical education materials. Toyomasu-san reported an international meeting on meteor held at Sweden, Meteorids 2001. He also reported taking lunar occultation of Jupiter, and Misato Observatory 45 cm solar radio telescope.

Ohta-kun and Nishibata-kun, seminar students, carried out an experiment of 'Martian Canals' and 'A 3D Model of the Earth and the Moon'. This was taken from Experiments C-8 and D-2 of The Universe at Your Fingertips edited by Project ASTRO (inspecting difference between sketches of 'Martian Canals' drawn at different distances from picture, making 50 'planetesimals', making 'the Earth' from 49 pieces).

21 June (Thursday)


We enjoyed wonderful images of the total solar eclipse through the Live! Eclipse 2001 (the eclipse started). Many people came together to the student room (pic, pic). The round and extended corona, which is expected at the maximum phase of the solar cycle, was displayed successfully (pic).

43rd Wakaten Meeting was held at 7th Seminar Room of Faculty of Education, Wakayama University, from 16:00 to 18:00. Participants were Toyomasu (Misato Observatory), Kamitamari (Kawabe Cosmic Park), Nishihama (Faculty of System-Engineering), Ishikawa, Tomita (Faculty of Education).


Toyomasu-san reported "Complete Monitoring of Meteor Stream Activities by World-Wide Meteor Radio Observations". Kamitamari-san and Toyomasu-san reported "10th Annual Meeting of Public Astronomical Observatories".

42nd Wakaten Meeting was held at 7th Seminar Room of Faculty of Education, Wakayama University, from 16:30 to 18:00. Participants were Toyomasu (Misato Observatory), Kamitamari (Kawabe Cosmic Park), Soga, Nishihama (Faculty of System-Engineering), Ishikawa, Tomita (Faculty of Education).


Kamitamari reported video images of Mars taken with 1-m telescope at Kawabe Cosmic Park. Tomita introduced The Universe at Your Fingertips be Project ASTRO, and Toyomasu reported present status of the remote telescope developed at Misato Observatory.

Seminar students of astronomy group (five juniors: FURUKAWA Shingo, OHTA Kenji, OKAMOTO Chisami, NISHIBATA Kazunori, and YAMAMOTO Mayumi) were decided to join Live! Eclipse 2001 team. They will make web contents on solar eclipse. OKYUDO Masami-san, a project leader, explained outline to the students (pic).

29 April (Sunday) - 4 May (Friday) 2001


I visited Kiso Observatory, Institute of Astronomy, University of Tokyo. The theme was Surface Photometry of Nearby Dwarf Irregular Galaxies, and it was a part of my project of obtaining area-integrated SEDs of dwarf irregular galaxies. As a test, we had an allocated term of nights from 30 April to 4 May. Unfortunately, we had only one clear night.


Dr. Miyata kindly told us how to control the system. This picture shows the control room, and from left are Mr. Ishikawa (Wakayama Univ, M1), Dr. Takeuchi (Univ of Tokyo, post-doc), Ms. Murakami (Nagoya Univ, M1), who are collaborators, Dr. Nishiura (Kiso Obs, post-doc), and Dr. Miyata (Kiso Obs, assistant prof).


Dr. Takeuchi gave lecture to two M1 students. This picture shows Dr. Takeuchi who showed inside the 105-cm Schmidt telescope. This picture shows Dr. Takeuchi who told Mr. Ishikawa how to connect a bar to the telescope. When it was cloudy, Dr. Takeuchi gave astrohpysical lectures. (pic).


The altitude of the observatory is high, so it was still cool. We could enjoy pretty cherry blossoms. A branch fell near the observatory (pic).

41st Wakaten (Wakayama Tenmon Consortium) Meeting was held at 7th Seminar Room of Faculty of Education, Wakayama University, from 16:30 to 18:30. Participants were Toyomasu (Misato Observatory), Yaji, Kojima, Kamitamari, Furuya (Kawabe Cosmic Park), Soga, Nishihama (Faculty of System-Engineering), Ishikawa, Tomita (Faculty of Education).


Toyomasu reported a aurora video which he took at Farebanks, Alaska on 19 to 20 March. Yaji reviewed of recent solar activities. Kojima showed the highlights of recent Mars and Jupiter observations.
