授業の概要・ねらい ／Course Aims |
This is an advanced course (特論科目) available to students enrolled in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year of the master's degree program at the faculty of tourism. The course discusses theoretical and practical approaches to tourism policy and planning, supplemented by critical reviews of past and current tourism plans and policies applied to different tourist destinations worldwide. The course highlights the importance of setting plans and policies for tourist destinations consistent with the existing global, regional, and local frameworks to maintain the destination's sustainable management, high quality of services, and the local communities and tourists' satisfaction. | ||||

到達目標 ／Course Objectives |
By the completion of this course, students are expected to: 1) Understand the key concepts and theories of tourism planning and policy. 2) Understand the measures to consider while setting a plan or policy for a tourist destination. 3) Develop applicable plans and proper policies, based on scientific approaches, for the different tourist destinations. 4) Be able to critically review and evaluate the efficiency of the under-implementation tourism plans and policies, and modify them accordingly. |

成績評価の方法・基準 ／Grading Policies/Criteria |
To successfully fulfill the course completion requirements, students are highly recommended to attend lectures and actively participate in class discussions, and to properly prepare and submit their assignments by the deadlines. In general, evaluation will be based on the following criteria: (1) In-class activities (participation and presentation): 20% (2) Practicing Workshop (Setting plan and policy for a tourist destination): 30% (3) Research skills Practicing: 20% (4) Individual Final Essay: (1500 words): 30% |

This course is important for future tourism planners, managers, heritage conservators, and practitioners. The course lectures will be in English; however, the instructor will simplify the material as much as possible by using simple language, giving several examples, and allowing open discussion. There will be several mini-group discussions during the lectures; therefore, all students must attend each lecture and actively participate. Please don't be shy; be proactive, ask questions, and share your point of view freely. | ||||

授業理解を深める方法 ／How to deepen your understanding of classes |
In general, this course discusses different themes using multiple teaching techniques, which correspond to the Active Learning Guidelines (5), (8), (9), and (10). The teaching techniques include critical thinking and assessment, discussion, presentation, case study, literature analysis, and practice of tourism policy and planning theories and approaches. Students are advised to deepen their understanding of such theories and approaches by revising the current and past plans and policies of several tourist destinations inside and outside Japan. Further readings of the up-to-date academic articles published in the 'International Journal of Tourism Policy' can help in this regard. | ||||
