授業の概要・ねらい
/Course Aims
Today, as the climate change and other environmental crisis become evident, sustainability awareness is increasing in all aspects of social life. Working towards more sustainable options, ecologically, socially and economically, is expected in all social activities, including tourism. In this course we will consider sustainability issue from diverse perspectives, including use of practical tools (eg indicators and standards). Case studies may be from the viewpoint of individual tourist (consumer), industry or destination (eg town, region, nation), from national and international examples, both positive and negative. Discussion and presentation based on research and analysis is valued in this subject to promote global viewpoint, critical perspective and inter-cultural consideration that are essential in dealing with diverse and complex issues of sustainability.

/Course Objectives
By the end of this program, students will:
- understand fundamental concept of sustainability related to social, ecological and economic aspects of society today
- understand possible negative and positive impacts tourism may have on society and the environment
- critically analyse causes of tourism and sustainability, relating to ecological, social and economic aspects,
understand use of practical tools such as sustaianble tourism indicator, and
- develop strategies to make tourism more sustainable and design possible actions.

Sustainability require a balance between Ecological, Social (cultural) and Economic elements. It is not only important to promote more sustainable tourism, but tourism can also promote more sustainability in environmental, social and economic factors.

This program includes field study that incurs travel expense (現地フィールドワークには実費がかかります)

/How to deepen your understanding of classes
Regular media survey on sustainability issues in tourism, and how SDGs are implemented in tourism policy across Japan and globe. Students are encouraged to take this task individually outside class, although the task will be also incorporated in the assignment as part of the in class discussion. (Active Learning 5, 8, 10)
