授業の概要・ねらい ／Course Aims |
This course introduces students to the important topic of tourism ethics and illustrates how ethical principles and theory can be applied to discuss and address many of the ethical challenges facing the tourism industry today. Understanding tourism from an ethical perspective allows us to explore a broad range of ethical issues in tourism, focusing on "big picture" problems facing the industry as a whole. Ethics also allows us to take a step outside the managerial box that frames many tourism debates and offers a space for thinking about tourism philosophically. Many of the issues facing tourism today--climate change, sustainability, social justice, equality, conducting business ethically--require this kind of big picture thinking. Using international case studies this course explores some key ethical perspectives and approaches to justice that are integral in the context of tourism. Discussions include structurally embedded injustices related to historical racism and colonialism, responsibility and responsible tourism, justice at different scales, and justice in the context of sustainability, governance, policy, and planning. |

到達目標 ／Course Objectives |
Upon successful completion of this course students will be expected to: - Understand why ethics is important and useful for tourism studies; - Explain the relationship between ethical tourism and other niche tourisms; - Identify and discuss the key ethical issues of today’s tourism industry; - Apply a range of different ethical theories and concepts to a range of tourism contexts; - Think critically and ask relevant questions in relation to the academic study of tourism, travel and ethics; - Be able to contribute to the ethical debates in tourism using English. |

This paper is primarily informed by published conceptual and empirical papers, which are outlined in course reading lists and made available to students online. However, the course will use the following book as its guiding text: Tazim Jamal (2019). Justice and Ethics in Tourism. London: Routledge. |

Please note: This course is one of the GP subjects; therefore, the course will be taught in English. This course is first and foremost about interaction between people, conversation, discussion and debate. I look forward to exploring the relationship between tourism and the environment together! |
