授業の概要・ねらい
/Course Aims
This course introduces students to the important topic of tourism ethics and illustrates how ethical principles and theory can be applied to discuss and address many of the ethical challenges facing the tourism industry today. Understanding tourism from an ethical perspective allows us to explore a broad range of ethical issues in tourism, focusing on "big picture" problems facing the industry as a whole. Ethics also allows us to take a step outside the managerial box that frames many tourism debates and offers a space for thinking about tourism philosophically. Many of the issues facing tourism today--climate change, sustainability, social justice, equality, conducting business ethically--require this kind of big picture thinking.

Using international case studies this course explores some key ethical perspectives and approaches to justice that are integral in the context of tourism. Discussions include structurally embedded injustices related to historical racism and colonialism, responsibility and responsible tourism, justice at different scales, and justice in the context of sustainability, governance, policy, and planning.

授業理解を深める方法
/How to deepen your understanding of classes
I see teaching and learning as a fundamentally social activity. This course is first and foremost about interaction between people, conversation, discussion and debate. With this in mind there are three class expectations:
     Read.
     Engage / experiment.
     Discuss.
Our collective task is to develop the skills (sense) to think critically about all forms of tourism and for critically reflecting on tourism to make a change in situations where the outcome of tourism is unjust, unequal or unfair.

This class aligns with the following Active Learning outcomes:
3. Students reflect on their own positions in the arguments rather than top-down teaching.
4. Expressing individual opinions through writing.
9. Multidisciplinary learning involving discussions from ethics, philosophy, ecology, feminism and much more.
