授業の概要・ねらい
/Course Aims
Principles of Tourism C: Tourism & Society.
This course aims to develop students’ fundamental knowledge and understanding of tourism's broader in shaping societies and cultures. As a second-year foundation course for tourism major students who of the Global Program, this class will further develop the academic skills needed to think critically and creatively about tourism as a social force. Topics include: the sociology of tourism, anthropological perspectives on tourism, culture and globalization; tourism and transportation; tourism planning for social and environmental justice.

/Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
  1. Explain the significance of tourism in our society;
  2. Identify the consequences and impacts of tourism
  3. Describe the structure and functioning of the tourism system;
  4. Understand the complex relations between global tourism and host communities;
  5. Critical analyze the tourist and tourism's role in society.

/Grading Policies/Criteria
For successful completion of this course, students must complete the activities listed below. Weights indicate the contribution of each activity to the final grade. Details of each activity will be provided in class.
1. In-class activities: 30%
2. Tourism & Society--group presentation: 30%
3. Individual final essay: 40%

Book chapters, academic journal articles and industry/government reports will also be used as course readings. Course readings will be provided in the class. Students may access course materials (lecture slides and readings) through the online system (Microsoft Teams).

・This course is a GP 2.0 course; as such, all teaching will be conducted in English.
・2年生から履修可能とする科目: This is a GP 2.0 course subject (GP指定科目). Students who completed all Principles of Tourism subjects (A, B) are recommended to take this subject.
・There will be many small group tasks during the lectures; therefore, all students are expected to attend each lecture and actively participate.

Through reading and discussion students will co-create knowledge throughout this class, taking ownership of learning and developing their own unique, independent voice.

After completing this course, students are encouraged to take Principles of Tourism D. Further study on ethics, social justice and social change can also be explored in the Ethics of Tourism and Travel course conducted by Dr. Adam Doering.

1 Lecture 1 Intro to Tourism & Society I Introduce the course content and review the syllabus.
2 Lecture 2 Intro to Tourism & Society I Introduction and discussions with one another.
3 Lecture 3 Social & Cultural Impacts I After this lecture series students will be able to identify the different social and cultural impacts tourism can have on host communities; and describe the underlying views and theories that influence how we see the roles and responsibilities of the tourism industry and tourists.
4 Lecture 4 Social & Cultural Impacts II After this lecture series students will be able to identify the different social and cultural impacts tourism can have on host communities; and describe the underlying views and theories that influence how we see the roles and responsibilities of the tourism industry and tourists.
5 Lecture 5 Managing/Responding to Impacts I Provide a basic understanding of a range of strategies used to manage socio-cultural impacts of tourism on communities and also examine how hosts, places and guests respond to tourism outside of management strategies, including activism and NPO work.
6 Lecture 6 Managing/Responding to Impacts II Provide a basic understanding of a range of strategies used to manage socio-cultural impacts of tourism on communities and also examine how hosts, places and guests respond to tourism outside of management strategies, including activism and NPO work.
7 Lecture 7 Tourism & Society Student Symposium I Student group presentations on the role of tourism in society
8 Lecture 8 Tourism & Society Student Symposium II Student group presentations on the role of tourism in society
9 Lecture 9 Anthropology of Tourism I An anthropological approach will be used to examine the "impact" of tourism on cultures and host communities. We examine key themes explore in the anthropology of tourism research including; authenticity, contested sites, touristic borderlines, and embodiment.
10 Lecture 10 Anthropology of Tourism II In the second half of the lecture we will examine the "how to" of doing ethnographic research by discussing the guiding principles and philosophy that make up an anthropology of tourism methodology.
11 Lecture 11 The sociology of tourism: Tourism impacts I Key concepts of the sociology of tourism will be introduced, in eluding a discussion of Urry's The Tourist Gaze and its critiques.
12 Lecture 12 The sociology of tourism: Tourism impacts II Key concepts of the sociology of tourism will be introduced, in eluding a discussion of Urry's The Tourist Gaze and its critiques.
13 Lecture 13 Tourism & Power I Students will gain a basic understanding of tourism in relation to power relations and understand why studying power is critical for tourism studies.
14 Lecture 14 Tourism & Power II Students will learn and apply three conceptual tools that allow us to examine the power relations in tourism: Ideology, Discourse, Hegemony
15 Lecture 15 Wrap up of course and final essay Final reflections on the course and course materials.
