授業の概要・ねらい
/Course Aims
In this program, we will learn Spiritual heritage associated with the World Heritage Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage in the Kii Mountain Range, where Buddhist, Shinto and animist beliefs blend, and examine tourism assets found in the region, walking as a slow and sustainable tourism development and options for sustainable management of the destination. We will walk the trails (Nakahechi 45km/Choishi-michi 20km) leading to the Three Kumano Grand Shrines and Koyasan. We meet local community, the high priest, monks and visit the coastal areas. Ability to walk the distance is required to participate in this program. Intensive (11 sessions), Pre/post-intensive (4 sessions). The field trip will be held first or second weekend (Friday-Sunday, or Saturday-Monday). Trip cost (transport, accommodation, meals) will incur for this trip.

/Course Objectives
In thie program, students will
- Reflect on our inner relationship with the natural environment
- Understand the historical, cultural and ecological significance of pilgrimage routes and the nature-culture integration seen in the World Heritage cultural landscape, Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range
- Learn spiritual cultures of Japan originating traditional beliefs esp Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, Shinto, Animism
- Understand issues associated with tourism development in the region
- Develop strategies for sustainable tourism development of the region.

Reading, Discussion in Pre-fieldwork 20%
Essay and Presentation (may include field survey on selected topics e.g. impacts of inbound tourism on regional communities) 30%
Active participation in fieldwork and discussion: 50%

Travel expense for the fieldwork will be required
Participation in all parts of the program is compulsory.
Intensive program (Walking Kumano-kodo) will be 5-8 January, 2024 (please make sure you can attend these days. Check your 成人式 date in particular)

/Prerequisite
Detailed orientation session will be held before fieldwork. You MUST attend the orientation for safety reason. Collaborative work is planned with el Camino (Pilgrimage to the Santiago de Compostela) with University of the Santiago de Compostela.

/How to deepen your understanding of classes
Refer to other pilgrimage - Shikoku Ohenro, Koyasan, Katsuragi Shugendo and Camino de Santiago. Consider what a "walking travel" mean today, especially in the COVID-19 affected era.  (Active Learning 5, 8, 10)
