授業の概要・ねらい
/Course Aims
Students will receive formal instruction and opportunities for practice related to academic language conventions such as hedging, nominalization, passive construction, and cohesive devices. Students will increase their vocabulary knowledge through focused practice and quizzes based on Averil Coxhead's Academic Word List. Students will hone their receptive skills of skimming and scanning in academic contexts in order to better prepare themselves for the large amounts of reading necessary when conducting a literature review and eventually writing an English dissertation. The core academic skills of summarization, interpretation, evaluation, and application including an emphasis on producing language with clarity, precision, logic, and objectivity will guide the approaches to teaching and learning in this course. Students will be expected to apply the skills they have practiced in the following performative activities and projects:
1.) A student-led discussion of an academic research paper related to the field of tourism
2.) The composition of a rough literature review related to a topic chosen by the student
3.) An oral presentation of their topic and review of relevant research findings
